❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS EASY DESSERT
One thing we love about this dessert is that it’s made in a 9X9 which is perfect for a small gathering or to enjoy for a few days. Plus you don’t even need your mixer for this cake which is always an added plus. The maple topping is a great addition and really just takes this cake up a level. These are a few of the key ingredients you will need for this recipe, scroll down to the printable recipe box for the complete recipe.
- All Purpose Flour
- White Granulated Sugar
- Baking Powder and Baking Soda
- Salt, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger and vanilla extract
- Butter and Sour Cream
- Diced Apples (we used red delicious)
- Walnuts or Pecans
- Topping Ingredients: brown sugar, maple extract, milk, butter and powdered sugar
You can easily swap out the nuts or leave them out altogether. Any apples will work in this cake recipe and the sour cream really makes this cake moist. We haven’t tried it but I think you could use greek yogurt in it’s place.
🍽️HOW TO MAKE
This recipe is super easy to make, get your ingredients organized, and go ahead and chop up your apples. It’s so nice to just mix it all together with a spoon!
Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and melted butter in a mixing bowl.
Stir in sour cream, vanilla extract, diced apples and eggs. Add nuts. Spray a 9 x 9 baking pan with cooking spray. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes until center tests done. Makes about 12 servings.
Step 3 – Topping
Combine brown sugar, milk and butter in a pan on top of the stove. Bring to a boil, stirring often, and boil for 1 minute. Remove and stir in maple extract. Drizzle or spread over cake. Can add more milk if needed to keep frosting the spreading consistency you want.
We added the chopped nuts to the top of the cake, which we love the texture that gives but you can easily just fold the nuts into the batter!
This frosting is one of our favorites, and you will love it too. As you can see from the directions, we only boil it for one minute. If you need to thin it some to get a better consistency to pour it over the cake, just add a little more milk.
❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We have never made it that way but I think it would work with a gluten free flour that is a 1:1 ratio.
No, you absolutely can’t taste the sour cream in the cake.
We just store this cake in an air-tight container and it will keep well for a few days. If it’s really moist and it’s hot out you may want to put it in the fridge as fruit can mold quickly.
