Sail away: The best way to experience the Norwegian coastline

If you were given the opportunity to visit the edge of the world, would you? The world’s northernmost settlement — Norway’s Longyearbyen — and the North Cape are the surreal destinations for two voyages on board cruise line Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express’ MS Trollfjord.

To celebrate 130 years of sailing, Hurtigruten has just launched two new itineraries on the Norwegian coastline — including the winter North Cape Express and the summer Svalbard Express. Starting in either buzzing Oslo or the cultural city of Bergen, these voyages to the earth’s end venture along the coast of mainland Norway, taking in iconic sights such as majestic fjords, coastal villages, Arctic wilderness, and the northern lights.

Here, we explore the highlights of the North Cape Express.

The newly refurbished MS Trollfjord is a luxurious home base for a coastal adventure. Classic and timeless, the ship’s interior décor evokes a sense of nostalgia that harks back to a golden era of exclusive small-ship sailing. Locally sourced natural materials such as wood and stone feature heavily, bringing the beautiful surroundings inside.

A two-storey observation lounge is the prime position to take in uninhibited views of some of Norway’s most stunning landscapes. Plus, there’s a panoramic sauna, fitness room, and sleeping options to meet all needs — from comfortable cabins through to exceptional suites with private balconies and ensuite bathtubs.

Enjoy daily excursions to remarkable destinations. On the North Cape Express, visit the northernmost point of mainland Europe — the North Cape — and peer out over the Barents Sea under the polar night sky.

Travel to an array of charming coastal villages, from the ancient fishing town of Rørvik to Hinnøya island. Experience local traditions in secluded villages with UNESCO World Heritage status, and then soak up the vibrant energy in Bergen, Norway’s cultural and artistic hotspot.

For wildlife lovers, there are excursions to spot the unique animals that inhabit the remote Norwegian Coast, such as sea eagles, puffins and reindeer. And for those with a taste for adventure, there are opportunities to hike across ice plains, go dog sledding, ice fishing or snowmobiling.

In the restaurants and bars on board the MS Trollfjord, the menus are a celebration of traditional methods and fresh ingredients. Besides local beer and gin, seafood is the speciality here with the likes of hand-picked scallops, Arctic char, oysters, and crayfish making daily appearances. During a travel day on board, take part in show-kitchen demonstrations to learn more about the specifics of coastal fare such as seaweed and skrei.

On land, there’s a variety of experiences for those who travel to eat. Visit the fish market in the city centre of Bergen, swing by a local brewery or tour a modern salmon farm and discover the Norwegian aquaculture industry that supplies the world with Nordic salmon. Don’t forget to order some fresh cod cakes, a local delicacy.

No trip to this pristine country is complete without witnessing the ethereal aurora borealis — Mother Nature’s ultimate light show. For travellers on the North Cape Express, Hurtigruten’s ‘Northern Lights Promise’ means you’re guaranteed a six or seven-day Classic Voyage for free if the lights are not recorded during your journey. After weeks of exploring the beautiful Norwegian coastline and unwinding on board the MS Trollfjord, add the northern lights dancing in the sky above and you’ve got a trip you’ll never forget.
